Some Story: Server Downtime ... Again

#1 Post by vinyard » Fri Sep 14, 2007 6:26 am

Well it seems that after the server upgrade last week not everything was rock solid as it seemed. Yesterday @ around 1p.m. the server randomly rebooted, giving me an idea that something was wrong. What, I wondered, could possibly be wrong? Could the server be under too much load? That would be highly unlikely, for I had a system 1/3 or less the machine this new server is and that ran without a hitch for four months. So I installed the Asus ProbeII (thats Probe 2) application to view system information, I was too lazy to reboot the system to go into bios, and ran the program. As soon as it started up an alarm sound started, it was very loud because I had my speakers half way up. It was alerting me that system temperature was critical. The CPU was @ 65 degrees Celsius and motherboard was 59. Now it all made sense. CS server crashing in the middle of games (thought it was software related), slow file transfer speed. I immedietaly powered off the system and started to re-check cable wiring and the CPU heatsink. The heatsink was bad to say the least. It fell apart as soon as I tried to remove it. (Intel Stock heatsinks suck) Then I took a look @ the thermal compound. For some odd reason it did not have enough. So I purchased a new heatsink and AS5 to go with it. It did not mater though the heatsink was not the problem. :x The CPU Temperature was still 55 degrees Celsius and rising; this is not normal for a Core 2 Duo. It turned out to be the motherboard (Asus P5NSLI). It ran hot. But this to me is way to hot. So I said to myself its defective and went to PC Club, bought a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L motherboard and re-wired the PC. Now the CPU seems to stay around 38 - 42 Degrees Celsius and file transfers seem to be faster. Hopefully this the end of the server problems but only time will tell. I will post images of the server later on.

Edit(09.15.2007):
* First Gigabyte motherboard died on me after reboot. :( Hopefully this replacement stays up & running.
* Videos are back up.
